Graphic Novel: a full-length (primarily, science fiction or fantasy) story published as a book in comic-strip format. Let’s make it easy on us and stick with this definition: It means a lot of different things to different people and is a hotly discussed topic in academia. ![]() ![]() The term “graphic novel” is not as straightforward as one might think. Who else would like this novel: if you liked Lindsay Boruker’s Emperor’s Edge series, I bet you like Swordheart.īest detail: the bird. Well put together, charming, predictable because hey, light romance, it is going to hit all the typical plot points with pretty standard timing. You immediately understand where that’s heading. Sarkis is the guy condemned to live in the sword and serve whoever wields it. Halla has inherited a minor fortune and a magic sword. There is a non-binary character who, first of all, outside of their pronouns, their gender literally never comes up ever, and even when kidnapped by total scum who are threatening to murder them, are never mis-gendered. Light, even somewhat silly fantasy romance. Kingfisher takes that idea and shoves it up where the sun don’t shine. The only author I know of who has written stories more different than these is Seanan McGuire, with her Newsflesh trilogy and tben that completely farcical UF series. ![]() The books are so different, almost as different as any author has ever written. A fast-paced, engrossing read that you won't want to put down. Wonderfully written characters that are portrayed as typical teenagers that possess extraordinary powers. Who will die next? Only Kaylee knows for sure. Nash doesn't seem as in the dark as Kaylee feels, and she needs to know why. But going out on that date has to take a backseat when classmates start dropping dead for no apparent reason. Being a normal girl to Kaylee is going out on a date with her crush, Nash, who also happens to be the hottest guy in school. When that happens, she feels the urge to scream loud enough for everyone to hear. Whenever she's near someone who is about to die, she can sense it. Kaylee Cavanaugh is not your average teenage girl.
